DHAKA — At least 10 people were killed and nine others injured after a fire swept through a beach resort in Cox’s Bazar, a popular tourist destination in southeastern Bangladesh, early Saturday, according to the country’s fire service.

The blaze broke out at a wooden resort and restaurant at Inani Sea Beach, trapping victims as they slept, local media reported.

The fire service confirmed that two firefighting units responded to the scene, working alongside local authorities and police to bring the blaze under control. The fire was subsequently extinguished.

Bangladesh’s Border Guard said its personnel also participated in the rescue operation.

According to Jamuna TV, at least nine people were injured when the fire erupted in the early morning hours. The identities of the victims have not yet been confirmed.

All those affected are believed to have been tourists, as the resort is located in one of Bangladesh’s most popular coastal destinations.

Preliminary reports suggested that the fire may have started from a stove in the resort’s kitchen or an electrical short circuit. However, authorities have not confirmed the cause.

District authorities have formed an investigation committee to determine the circumstances surrounding the deadly blaze.
